Dr.-Patel-200x300Dr. Chirag V. Patel, MD, FACS is board-certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care through the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Patel attained his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine where he graduated in 1992 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, a distinction reserved for the top 10 percent of medical graduates. He continued his studies in General Surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. Following his residency Dr. Patel went on to a prestigious Fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care at the St. Louis University Hospital System.

In 1998, Dr. Patel was recruited back by his previous Chairman of Surgery to join the Department of Surgery faculty at UC-Irvine as a Clinical Professor. His responsibilities included teaching medical students and surgery residents; conducting research on far-ranging topics from critical care management to the human impact from automobile crashes; and performing routine and complex general surgery, burns and trauma operations. He specialized in the surgical management of complex intestinal fistulas and surgical nutrition therapies and treated patients referred to him from the entire southern California region.

He brought this varied experience and expertise to his current practice in 2006. He was recruited to join the South Orange County Surgical Medical Group by several of his previous resident graduates from UC-Irvine. He served as Chief of Surgery at the Saddleback-San Clemente campus for four years and was a member of Saddleback’s Medical Executive Committee from 2008 to 2012. He is the current Chair of the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Committee which oversees surgical care safety throughout the Memorial Care Health System, and a Board member of the Memorial Care Physician Society and Saddleback Memorial Foundation. The Physician Society is integral in assuring that nationally-established clinical Best Practices are utilized throughout the Memorial Care Health System, and the Foundation develops the philanthropic resources necessary for Saddleback Memorial Medical Center to enhance the health and well-being of individuals, families and our community.

Dr. Patel’s specialty areas are general and colorectal surgery. From removal of “lumps and bumps” to gallbladder surgery to complex intestine operations for treating infections or cancer, Dr. Patel realizes that modern surgical treatment must combine the innovations of Science with the Art of healing the whole person to deliver comprehensive, compassionate care.

In his spare time, Dr. Patel enjoys reading, listening to jazz and rock and roll music, watching films and taking photographs of his wife and two sons.
